What are life skills and what are they for?

As defined by theWorld Health Organization, life skills are skills necessary for the development of a behavior adaptive e positive, which enable individuals to cope e manage the challenges presented by daily life.

These are skills that go beyond mere theoretical knowledge: providing us with the tools necessary to move successfully in the complex dynamics of relational e personal, life skills are aimed at enabling people to live a life more full, satisfying and balanced.

In fact, when properly developed, life skills help to improve the quality of life and the ability to relate positively to others.

Through educational yoga, it is possible to build frames and contexts of life in which develop and/or train these skills. By fostering relationship with the other and self-knowledge, Educational Yoga enables the personal and relational development, making the life skills an integral part of everyday life!

Let us now see what the life skills are.

How many life skills are there?

Based on the definition we have just seen, the competencies that can be defined as life skills are many and their nature and definition can vary greatly depending on the culture of reference.

However, upon thorough analysis, theWHO was able to bring out a set of 10 skills, divided into 3 macro-areas, essential for promote the health and the wellness by children, teenagers e adults.

The 3 macro areas are:

1. Emotional skills

The skills emotional are fundamental to the Managing and understanding one’s emotions. These skills help develop a strong identity and to maintain a balanced behavior even in stressful situations. The life skills in this area are:

  • self-knowledge: Self-awareness involves the ability to identify and understand one’s own emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. This skill is fundamental for developing a strong identity and for recognizing how emotions influence our actions;
  • emotion management: This skill implies the ability to control and regulate one’s emotional reactions. Knowing how to manage intense emotions, such as anger or sadness, without being overwhelmed by them, is crucial for maintaining balanced and constructive behavior;
  • stress management: Stress management consists of using effective strategies to reduce and control daily stress. Techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, and physical activity can contribute to maintaining psychophysical well-being and improving the ability to face difficulties.

1. Relational skills

The interpersonal skills are essential for building and maintaining positive and meaningful relationships. These skills improve ability to communicate effectively and to resolve conflicts, fostering more harmonious. The life skills in this area are:

  • empathy: is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. It is essential for building meaningful relationships and for interacting with compassion and understanding. Empathy improves communication and conflict resolution;
  • effective communication: Effective communication consists of the ability to clearly express one’s thoughts and feelings, as well as to actively listen to others. It includes both verbal and non-verbal communication and helps reduce misunderstandings and improve social interactions;
  • effective relationships: This skill concerns building and maintaining positive relationships. It includes the ability to collaborate, resolve conflicts, and support others in a respectful way. Effective relationships are fundamental for creating strong and supportive social networks.

3. Cognitive skills

The skills cognitive allow one to Analyze and solve problems critically and creatively. These skills are fundamental for making Decisions and to find innovative solutions to daily challenges. The life skills in this area are:

  • ability to make decisions: This skill involves a careful evaluation of available options in order to choose the best one based on accurate information. It is essential for solving problems and for making informed decisions that positively influence one’s life;
  • problem-solving skills: Problem-solving means finding effective solutions to complex situations. It requires creativity, critical thinking, and the ability to analyze situations from different perspectives;
  • critical thinking: Critical thinking is the ability to analyze and evaluate information objectively. It allows for making decisions based on a thorough understanding, avoiding bias and errors in judgment;
  • creative thinking: This skill consists of finding innovative and original solutions to problems. It is fundamental for innovation and for facing challenges in new ways, improving the ability to adapt and thrive in dynamic environments.

The full realization of a human being depends on their ability to enter into a positive relationship with themselves and with others. In this sense, Educational Yoga stands as a rich and comprehensive tool of opportunities for the development of life skills!

But before we delve into the revolutionary method of Educational Yoga, let’s see what these skills consist of, one by one.

What are the life skills?

As we have seen, the life skills identified by WHO are. 10. Among these we find:

Self-awareness

Self-awareness enables one to to know oneself, identifying what characterizes us, enhancing the one’s strengths and recognizing the areas for improvement.


Being self-aware forms the basis for communicating effectively and establishing solid interpersonal relationships. Furthermore, understanding oneself and one’s emotions allows one to Develop empathy and understanding toward others, further enriching our interactions and relationships.

Emotion management

It is essential to know how to manage e react in the right way to emotions, especially when they are intense, such as anger or pain. In fact, if not addressed correctly, these can cause negative repercussions on our health e well-being.

But managing emotions also means identifying e understand the our feelings and those of others, recognizing theeffect they can have on our (and their) behavior.

Stress management

Dealing with stress requires us to identifying, understand e solve all sources of tension within our daily lives.

This could result in taking measures to eliminate o reduce sources of stress, modifying one’s environment or one’s living habits. At the same time, it could also mean learning relaxation techniques, so as to ensure that stress, when inevitable, does not become dangerous to one’s health.

Empathy

Empathy is the ability to “tune in” to another individual, understanding his or her decisions, his feelings and his experience, even if different or distant from our personal reality.

This emotional connection makes it easier for us to understanding e welcome people different from us, greatly improving our interactions, especially in contexts of ethnic or cultural diversity.

Without a doubt, empathy is a fundamental pillar for building a more inclusive e supportive.

Communicating effectively

Communicating effectively means having the ability to express yourself, both verbally and nonverbally, in a way appropriate and efficient for the culture and the context social in which one finds oneself.

This means being able to voice opinions, criticism, wishes, fears, needs, but also seek help, council e opinions.

Ability to relate

The ability to relate indicates the ability to establish e nurture ties positive with those around us.

This not only facilitates us in the creation e preservation of healthy relationships, but it also represents a fundamental pillar for our mental and social balance.

Building and maintaining strong relationships with our family members, for example, provides us with a support network that is extremely important in facing the challenges presented by life.

But it’s not just about creating ties, this skill also gives us the tools we need to conclude relationships in a constructively e respectful, when this becomes necessary.

Ability to make decisions

Decision-making ability indicates the individual’s ability to manage the process of choice, opting for the most appropriate decision.

This is a skill very important, as only by by weighing the various alternatives and the impacts of different decisions is it possible positively influence one’s own health and one’s well-being.

Problem-solving skills

Problem-solving skills enable you to effectively manage the challenges posed by existence. In fact, unresolved problems can be the source of stress that, if not addressed, can accumulate and manifest itself in various unpleasant ways, both at level mental and physical.

Critical thinking

Critical thinking represents the ability to examine e evaluate information and experiences with an eye impartial e analytical. It goes beyond the simple assimilation of data, as it requires an deep investigation and a reflection on what is presented to us.

Critical thinking is one valuable tool: allows us to identify, understand e weigh the different elements that can model e influence our attitudes e behaviors.

These elements include the personal values e cultural, l’influence exerted by peers and thepervasive effect of the media.

Creative thinking

Creative thinking is a life skill directly linked to the ability to make decisions and solve problems. It is, in fact, that skill that allows one to explore different possible avenues and to ponder the effects of one’s choices.

Creative thinking allows us to to look beyond our own backyard, beyond our direct experience.

Even in the absence of problems to be solved or decisions to be made, it provides us with the tools to react with agility and versatility to the circumstances we face in everyday life.

Life skills and soft skills: what is the difference?

Life skills and soft skills are often used as synonyms–but are they the same thing? Not really!

The soft skills represent all those skills that, while not strictly technical, play a crucial role in determining our work effectiveness.

These are skills such as communication, the collaboration and management of stress, but also the resilience, l’attention to detail and the ability to adapt to new situations.

All of these are essential skills for successfully disentangling oneself in the dynamic world of work today.

Life skills, on the other hand, are deeper and more deeply rooted skills, which influence every aspect of our existence.

So, while soft skills support and enhance our job performance, life skills have a general effect and enable us to live a more balanced and fulfilling.

The importance of life skills in school

As you can imagine, life skills also play a crucial role (and especially) in educational contexts.

Life skills, in fact, not only help students to face school challenges, but enable them to effectively manage the many personal and relational challenges associated with growing up.

In school, the acquisition of these skills contributes not only to an improvement in “performance”, but also to the development of more balanced and aware individualsi.

From their earliest years, in fact, students begin to interact with their peers. These interactions, although guided by curiosity and by the desire of entertainment, are not always without obstacles. Not all children are endowed with the same relational skills, such as empathy, the self-confidence and communication skills: these differences can lead to ineffective relationships or, in some cases, harmful.

Here, through targeted educational programs e innovative teaching methodologies, it is possible to enhance education schooling through the use of life skills! This not only helps students to overcome relational challenges, but also prepares them for the future challenges, both in life personal and professional.

The teacher, in this context, is no longer just a transmitter of knowledge, but becomes a guide essential for personal growth, able to help students face growth and the daily routine of life with peace of mind e positivity.

How to develop life skills?

As pointed out by WHO, the ideal age range to start developing life skills is from 6 to 16 years of age, a phase in which any harmful behaviors are not yet too deeply rooted. However, acquiring life skills does not happen overnight, but requires time, practice e dedication.

Getting more practical, these skills can be developed through different methodologies e contexts.

As already pointed out, the school plays a fundamental role! Through routes e methodologies targeted, students can develop empathy, safety in se same, interpersonal skills, communicative, etc. To give an example, group work, moments of sharing or methodologies such as the cooperative learning or the jigsaw classroom are tools very effective For the development of life skills.

But it is also essential to remember that learning life skills is a continuous journey! The key to success is practice constant andself-reflection. It is essential to dedicate time every day to reflect on one’s own actions, on the interactions with others and on how one has dealt with the challenges.

Only in this way can you recognize areas where you need to improve and develop strategies for strengthen one’s competencies.
